and Key Focus Areas
What you will learn
This one-day course is designed to strengthen your confidence and clinical overview when working with cardiac patients in daily practice. Many clinicians encounter patients with heart murmurs or symptoms suggestive of heart disease, and knowing how to approach these cases calmly and systematically is essential for sound clinical decision-making.

The course provides a structured framework for assessing cardiac patients, with focus on what can be managed within your own clinic or hospital and when referral is the appropriate next step. You will gain insight into interpretation of common clinical findings, the use of biomarkers in practice, and practical considerations when approaching challenging cases – including the dyspnoeic cat.

Common acquired and congenital cardiac diseases are covered, linking pathology and pathophysiology with diagnostic work-up and treatment options. Anaesthesia considerations for cardiac patients are integrated throughout the course and supported by relevant clinical cases.

The day also includes an introduction to echocardiography, combining theoretical principles with a practical scanning demonstration. Focus is placed on probe handling and image optimisation, with particular attention to patients with MMVD, giving you a clearer understanding of how echocardiography fits into everyday cardiology practice.

Course content includes
  • Heart murmurs – what now? Murmur grading, clinical signs, in-house management vs. referral, use of biomarkers and approach to the dyspnoeic cat.
  • Common cardiac diagnoses. Acquired and congenital conditions, diagnostic work-up, treatment options and anaesthesia considerations.
  • Echocardiography theory. Focus on the patient with MMVD..
  • Practical scanning demonstration. Probe handling and optimisation of echocardiographic images.
Course outcomes
After the course, you will be able to approach cardiac patients in a structured and confident way, including assessment of heart murmurs and common clinical findings.
