Orthopaedics from Puppy to Adult - VETweek 2026

Get a clear overview of musculoskeletal development in puppies and how early movement, training and management shape lifelong function. You’ll also explore key orthopaedic conditions in young and adult dogs, including hip dysplasia, elbow disease, cruciate injuries and patellar luxation — plus current diagnostic and treatment options such as arthroscopy, total hip replacement and dynamic TPLO.

and Key Focus Areas
What you will learn
This one-day course takes you from the healthy, active puppy to the adult dog with orthopaedic disease. You will learn how the musculoskeletal system develops, how much activity is actually safe for a growing dog, and how to recognise early signs of orthopaedic problems. The course also covers current options for managing hip dysplasia, elbow disease and stifle conditions – including when advanced procedures such as hip replacement, arthroscopy or Dynamic TPLO may be indicated.

Course program
Course day: Orthopaedics from Puppy to Adult
  • Puppy in motion – dos and don’ts: what research tells us about safe loading and activity in growing dogs
  • Development of the musculoskeletal system – normal motor development, movement patterns and training strategies
  • Working with problem cases: from gait assessment to targeted training and rehabilitation plans
  • Hip dysplasia and hip replacement – indications, expectations and candidate selection
  • Elbow disease (ED) – where are we today? Clinical experience with arthroscopy and new treatment possibilities
  • Cruciate ligament rupture and patellar luxation – options in growing and adult dogs, including Dynamic TPLO
Course outcomes
After the course, you will be more confident in advising owners on safe activity and training for puppies, identifying locomotor problems early, and choosing appropriate diagnostics and treatment strategies for hip, elbow and stifle disease. You will also be better equipped to integrate orthopaedic and rehabilitation considerations into everyday clinical decision-making and long-term management plans.

This course is developed and organized by Boehringer Ingelheim.
