What you will learn
This two-day course gives veterinarians a deeper insight into behavioural medicine and emotional wellbeing in dogs and cats. Through lectures, discussions and practical tools, you will learn how emotional, physical and cognitive health interact – and how to integrate this understanding into everyday clinical practice.

Course program
Day 1: Comprehensive veterinary healthcare
  • Recognising emotions in non-human animals – and why it matters in clinical work
  • Understanding behavioural indicators of emotional health
  • How physical, emotional and cognitive health influence each other
  • Practical tools for supporting emotional wellbeing – pheromones, nutraceuticals and medication
Day 2: Behavioural medicine in the general veterinary practice
  • Designing patient-centred veterinary visits for dogs and cats
  • Recognising and managing separation-related behaviours
  • Addressing behavioural challenges in multi-animal homes
  • Assessment and management of fear-based behaviours
Course outcomes
After the course, you will be able to recognise emotional states and behavioural indicators in dogs and cats, and understand how they affect clinical outcomes. You will learn practical tools to reduce stress during veterinary visits and support emotional wellbeing. You will also gain clear strategies for managing separation-related, fear-based and multi-animal home behavioural challenges.

Sarah Heath is a European and RCVS-recognised Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine, with extensive clinical and teaching experience. She is a highly respected lecturer in small animal behavioural medicine and a visiting educator at the University of Liverpool.
